Design and Evaluation of Software Defined Radio Based Packet Sniffer for IEEE 802.15.4 Communication.

In our research, we often use wireless IEEE 802.15.4(e) communication. To check what is going on in the air, it can be useful to scan the spectrum for messages, without having to be part of the network. A device that does this is called a sniffer.

Most sniffers available are based on regular radio devices normally used for communication of the same type as the network being observed. This limits them to the predefined network parameters, e.g. they can only listen to a single radio channel.
Software defined radios (SDR) are devices with a general purpose receiver that can be reprogrammed for various functionality.
The goal of the thesis is to program the device to capture packets, regardless of the protocols used, and pipe them to a network analyses tool such as Wireshark.

As SDR’s often have a broad spectral range their main attraction as packet sniffer is that they could scan multiple channels at once.

Kind of work

Develop software for a suitable SDR module using a SDK and framework of choice (e.g. GNU Radio).
Evaluating the design using an SDR module and IEEE 802.15.4 modules.

Framework of the Thesis

For our current research projects we often work in collaboration with industry partners looking for novel IoT technology.
