Developing a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for multi-hop Long Range (LoRa) networks

The LoRa modulation allows for offers new possibilities in the world of the Internet of Things, with several kilometer transmissions of low datarate messages. However, LoRa is primarily used in star topologies, allowing only one hop communication. To reach the goal of using IP-based multi-hop based on the RPL protocol, a new layer needs to be developed and tested at the data link layer, one that can overcome the challenges of routing between neighbor nodes using different LoRa datarates.

Kind of work

Defining a new protocol based on new mechanisms or reusing algorithms and strategies usually used on top of any other physical layer.

Framework of the Thesis

This work is in the context of the currently running projects (EU and industrial) of the ETRO-Smartnets group.

Number of Students

1 or 2 students

Expected Student Profile

Engineering or computer science student with knowledge about telecom and wireless technologies and some experience with C programming.
