Developing an application layer protocol for compression of measurement data based on the oneM2M service platform

Thanks to the appearance of different platforms attempting to standardize the way small devices communicate and make the data they provide available to applications, the The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming very powerful. One such platform is geared by oneM2M (a global standard developed by several international telecoms institutes), in which measurement and actuation are represented by “content instances”, which structures vastly depend on the applications using it. The creation of such content instances in a classical way, using protocols accepted by oneM2M such as CoAP or MQTT, requires messages that are too long for the low datarates that are available on e.g. the long range radio technologies that have appeared in recent years (LoRa, Sigfox…). There is thus a need for a new Application Layer protocols capable of summarizing the metadata of those messages in a few bytes.

Kind of work

Defining a new Application Layer protocol, based on the functionalities offered by the oneM2M platform, implementing it and testing it in real life scenarios.
