Hardware/Software Enhancement of Acoustic Imaging


Acoustic Cameras are graphical catalogs of noise, local ambient sound, or anything else which is audible. The target of this proposal is to improve the overall quality of an existing System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGA-based acoustic camera by using image libraries such as OpenCV or Deep Learning (DL) approaches.
Additional operations such as microphone equalization, image correction or super-resolution can also be used to improve the generation of the acoustic images. The proper distribution of the operations executed in an embedded processor and on the hardware accelerator leads to high-quality real-time sound map of the surrounding environment. The target platform is a SoC FPGA and a MEMS microphone array.

Kind of work

- Study of the most relevant image operations to enhance the quality of the acoustic images.

- Performance analysis of the distribution between an embedded processor and a hardware accelerator the relevant image operations.

- SW/HW co-design on an SoC FPGA to achieve the highest quality and performance.

Framework of the Thesis

This thesis is related to the research track at the RapptorLab (INDI department) in collaboration with ETRO.

Number of Students


Expected Student Profile

- Basic knowledge of/ experience in FPGAs.
- Good programming skills (C/C++, Python or Matlab).
