MEMS microphones are miniature microphones, usually in the form ofa surface mount device, which use a micro-machined pressure-sensitive di-aphragm as a way to pick up sound waves. They are steadily becoming morepower and space ecient and their audio data quality is already equal or bet-ter to the previously ubiquitous electret condenser microphones. These char-acteristics, together with their low cost and small-form factor, makes themideal for wireless applications in consumer products and wireless sensor net-works. This chapter explores the use and potential of MEMS microphonesin wireless consumer products, acoustic noise wireless sensor networks andsound source localization applications with microphone arrays.
