Firstly, you can calculate your own quotation on the website: https://vubpress.mijndoctoraat.be/en, where you can also find further information. If you approve the quote, they will ask you to send the definitive files in PDF-format. Then they check the layout (table of contents, page numbers, general look, consistency …). If issues are noticed, they will let you know so you can still amend them. Finally, they take care of a colophon page with ISBN etc. (for official registration).
A few tips:
– Keep at least one white page free after the front page of the thesis, for the colophon.
– Make sure that all odd page numbers are in the bottom right-hand corner of the page and all even page numbers are in the bottom left-hand corner of the page. This looks more elegant in the layout.
– Make sure that all chapters start on an UNEVEN (right-hand) page. You can check this by opening your manuscript in Adobe Acrobat, and setting the page view of the PDF to two pages (book format). Don’t forget to check the option that the front page is separate (see picture attached)!
We also issue a cover. There are (free) standard covers for the VUB. If you have a high resolution illustration for the cover, you can send it over as well. As you can see in in the blue cover example, a picture has been placed in the triangle to replace the orange. If you’d prefer to have a personalized cover design, you can provide us with an example of the design (Word/pdf) and send over all the images/logos you’d like to show, and we’ll recreate your design at an additional cost of about 75 euros.
The whole process takes about 7 days to complete. Normally, you would send us the files on Monday or Tuesday (at the latest around noon), and the booklets can then be collected here (= Keizerslaan 34) the week afterwards on Tuesday. Or at a small additional cost they can be delivered at an address of choice on Monday.
