Contemporary healthcare systems face several complex challenges, including rising demand due to an aging population, increasing prevalence of chronic and complex conditions, rising costs, and shortages in the healthcare workforce. At the same time, care delivery is at the dawn of another paradigm change, referred to as Health 5.0 which reframes technology- and data-driven innovation into a human-centered, intelligent, and ethically grounded health ecosystem. Health 5.0 envisions care systems that are not only smart and efficient but also moves healthcare from a reactive, one-size-fits-all model to a proactive holistic, and value-driven approach.
UP_Health is a multidisciplinary consortium bringing together highly specialized technical and clinical expertise from VUB and the University Hospital (UZB). Together they defined an innovation roadmap for data-driven HealthTech innovation addresses the rising demand for preventive, personalized, and AI-driven healthcare, opening pathways for new products (devices, wearables), services (digital therapeutics, AI platforms), and validated clinical applications. The innovation roadmap is structured around four strategic tracks: (1) Medical Technologies & Imaging Systems (2) Integrated Health Data for Prediction & Clinical Decision Support (3) Human-Centric AI & Modelling and (4) Data-Driven Lifestyle Intervention & Rehabilitation. These tracks aim to deliver scalable, inclusive, and clinically validated solutions that transform healthcare from reactive to proactive, personalized, and value-driven.
