In the current development of HEVC, the compression improvement compared to H.264/AVC is far more significant for inter pictures than for intra pictures. One of the problems introduced by HEVC intra compression is the large amount of intra modes (up to 34) that need to be signaled in the bitstream. In this paper, we describe a low complexity intra mode prediction algorithm which predicts the intra modes more accurately. This is achieved by exploiting the similarity between the prediction direction of the neighboring prediction units and the optimal mode of the encoded prediction unit. As a result, more efficient intra compression can be obtained with minimal impact on encoder and decoder complexity. On average, 0.28% bitrate improvement is obtained by this low complexity prediction algorithm. For sequences dominated with directional intra modes, around 1% bitrate improvement is measured.
