Abstract 

The research related to imaging and sensing at the GHz-THz laboratory of ETRO-VUB spans a broad range of activities: from theoretical electromagnetic concepts and material research up to devices, circuits and system design. Fast active multi-parameter mm wave imaging systems for concealed weapon detection on the human body could perform the job in a few seconds, multi-parameter imaging enhancement techniques have been developed, functional antenna arrays have been implemented and characterized up to 220 GHz, meta-material characterization including sub-micron thickness sensing of thin coatings and materials, forward and inverse problem solving of multi-layer dielectric structures, the characterization of liquid mixtures @ nanoliter level with a world record bio-sensor geometry (85 dB sensor signal change between water and methanol). The group also developed skills in sub-wavelength near-field imaging with resolution of ?/6000. Recently a novel and unique radar technique has been developed to obtain world record deep sub-wavelength resolution, ?/100. Compressive sensing techniques complement the radar work. Finally the impact of these GHz-THz waves on mice brain is under investigation.
