Worldwide huge amounts are invested in R&D for new, digital, high speed networks, with the promise of new multimedia applications. But currently almost all effort is directed at the network infrastructure itself, and under high competitive pressure all research investments that are not immediately productive for this goal is postponed or neglected. This project proposes to tackle some of these problems outside this hypercompetitive environment, so that some in-depth research can be performed on them. Topics to be handled are the study of protocol and end computer requirements for realmultimedia applications, the performance issue in protocols and end computer system for high speed networking, and stability of network communication protocols. As an innovation, the application of knowledge gained from control theory to the performance analysis and stability problems in protocols will be attempted.
