The proposed research proposal aims at the realization of a wavelet-based video coding scheme that defeats current state-of-the-art scalable video coding technologies (MPEG-4, H.26L). Therefore, several realization possibilities will be examined for their rate-distortion performance, typically required functionalities (like quality, resolution and temporal scalability) and finally implementation complexity (includes complexity scalability). To increase its robustness for transmission of video over error-prone or congestion suffering channels, multi-descriptive coding technology will be investigated for the most promising schemes. Finally, the efficient hardware/software implementation of the selected coding architectures will be explored.
