Wireless sensor networks (WSN) consist of autonomous intelligent sensor nodes, usually powered by battery, which can measure certain characteristics of their environment, such as temperature, pressure, noise level, acceleration etc. These sensor nodes communciate by radio with their neighbours to forward their measurements to some central data collection point from where all the data is sent to a processing and analyses center, via any classical network, such as the Internet.
The purpose of this work is to demonstrate to which extend problem based learning can help engineering student to acquire the scientific insight and the skills needed to deploy sensor networks.
Using sensor networks for problem based learning in computer science and engineering could be a cost effective way to introduce modern educational methods in developing countries, while, as a side effect, generating awareness and know-how about WSNs that are considered as high potential tools to protect developing countries against natural disasters.
