The origin of the co-operation with Hanoi University of Technology dates back from before the current Institutional University Co-operation programme.
The main topics covered were:
- Human Resources development, mainly giving the opportunity to young staff members of HUT to obtain a doctoral degree from a Flemish University, and prepare them to become Professors at HUT
- Allowing technical and academic staff to get acquainted with modern technology, teaching methods and laboratory techniques
- Upgrading the infrastructure of the student and research laboratories, which laked modern equipment
